Athena helmet Pendant

925 Sterling Silver Athena Helmet Pendant

925 sterling silver pendant, depicting Athena’s head wearing a helmet.

Athena’s helmet: Aegina stater. It was minted in the 8th century BC, owl on the back.

Athena, or Minerva as she was named later by the Romans, was the virgin goddess of wisdom. She is said to have sprung, fully grown in complete armor, from the brain of her father, Zeus (Jupiter). She usually appears wearing a helmet with a plume and a breastplate. In her right hand, she held a spear and in her left hand a shield, the aegis, with the head of the Gorgon Medusa on it. Sometimes she is attended by a winged figure, Nike, goddess of victory and success. Athena’s symbols are the owl, the olive tree, and the distaff as she protects the craft of weaving. The city of Athens was named after her, as Athena was the patron goddess of the city.
